Penyaminyan, the legendary weaver who started weaving this type of rugs, died in 1949. Sirinian family continued to weave carpets in Penyaminyan’s workshop. This design belongs to Penyaminyan himself. Penyaminyan weaved similar carpets to be used in Ottoman palaces during the first world war. This piece is weaved by a master weaver selected among 400 weavers. She worked for 1 hour everyday on this carpet since it requires highest level of concentration. She completed the rug in 7 years. The rug has a dominant “Mihrap” figure. This figure stands for Sultan’s head/crest and symbolizes power. In the center it says “This also shall pass away” “Ayet – El Kursi”, a prayer is written in the outer border. “Death is for human and human is for death. What man makes is immortal” is written around the Mihrap|
